History
Established by Resolution 36 (IV) of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC. 1st Session held in May 1947, Geneva (Switzerland). Took over the functions of H-XH0597 - Emergency Economic Committee for Europe, which had been set up in 1945. In 1951 became a permanent organ (regional commission) of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN); currently one of the 5 regional commissions of the United Nations. Based at E-XE3343 - United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).
Aims
Promote pan-European economic integration by bringing together 56 countries located in the European Union, non-EU, the Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as North America, Turkey and Israel; encourage dialogue and cooperation among members on economic and sectoral issues; provide analysis, policy advice and assistance to governments; give focus to UN global mandates in the economic field, in cooperation with other global players and key stakeholders, notably the business community; set out norms, standards and conventions to facilitate international cooperation within and outside the region.
