The UIA is an entirely independent nonprofit institute whose services are available for the benefit of all. Our organizational structure also mirrors what we strive for: democracy and participation.
The UIA consists of, and is largely shaped by, our Active Members, individuals who wish to actively contribute to the development of a global civil society. Members are admitted without distinction of nationality, race, sex or creed, and irrespective of adherence to ideological, political or professional groups, from among persons who are particularly interested in the our aims. The Active Members compose the General Assembly, the UIA’s controlling body, which convenes once a year. From among the Members, the General Assembly elects the Council as the UIA’s management body; the Council is composed of a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 18 Active Members. The Council, in turn, elects a President, three Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer-general and a Secretary-general, who together form the Bureau as the executive body of the Council.
