History

Established within the framework of the F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) under the T-XT9113 - Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty). Scope enlarged under T-XT9706 - Treaty of Amsterdam and T-XT0128 - Nice Treaty. 1st plenary session: 9-10 Mar 1994, Brussels. Since the T-XT2073 - Treaty of Lisbon came into force 2009, acts as an advisory body to F-XF0667 - European Parliament (EP), E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union and E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC).

Aims

Represent local and regional authorities across the European Union and advise on new laws that have an impact on regions and cities (70% of all EU legislation); bring EU citizens closer to the EU institutions' work; coordinate action between the European, national, regional and local levels.

Members organized through 6 Political groups, each with its own secretariat: E-XE2123 - Group of the European People's Party in the Committee of the Regions (EPP-CoR); E-XE5945 - Party of European Socialists (PES) - CoR; E-XM4739 - Renew Europe - Committee of the Regions (Renew Europe); E-XM4740 - European Alliance Group at the Committee of the Regions (EA-CoR); E-XM4741 - European Conservatives and Reformists Group - Committee of the Regions (ECR-CoR); the Greens. Joint Services of the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions (Translation; Logistics).
