History
Founded at constituent General Assembly, when statutes were adopted. Statutes revised by Extraordinary General Assemblies of: 21 Nov 1987; 28 Nov 1989; 5 Dec 1990; 5 Feb 1992; 3 Jul 1992; 2 Dec 1993; 4 Dec 1996; 7 Dec 2000; 26 Nov 2002. Foundation followed the setting up, 1971-1973, of the first European inter-regional associations - D-XD6446 - Association of European Border Regions (AEBR), F-XD6554 - Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR) and the then U-XE6885 - Committee for Cooperation of Alpine Regions - and the unanimous approval by 52 Regions, 4 Oct 1984, Trieste, of a proposal of a meeting of the 'Island Committee' made to CPMR, 27 Mar 1984, Azores. Continues the activities of U-XU0679 - Liaison Office of the European Regional Organisations, created 1980, Strasbourg (France), which ceased to exist when CER - now AER - was set up. First General Assembly of European Regions held 24-26 Nov 1985, Strasbourg, in the hemicycle of the European Parliament.
Aims
Organize common dialogue, research and activities among regions belonging to member countries of the European Union and Council of Europe, with due regard to treaties and constitutions of the various states; strengthen representation of the regions within European institutions, and facilitate their participation in the construction of Europe and in Community life in all aspects concerning them; cooperate with European associations representing local authorities; support the action of the founder inter-regional organizations and of those which may later become members; promote regionalism and federalism in Europe.
