History
Established following Resolution 1086 B (XXXIX) of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC, 30 Jul 1965, urging an expanded United Nations Programme in Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. Operates within the framework of F-XK2387 - United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network, as an autonomous institution of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN). New statutes and present name adopted by Resolution 1989/56 of ECOSOC, 24 May 1989.
Aims
Advance security, serve justice, and build peace in support of the rule of law and sustainable development; focus on advancing understanding of crime-related problems, identifying appropriate strategies, policies, and instruments, fostering just and efficient criminal justice systems, supporting the respect of international instruments and standards, and facilitating international law enforcement and judicial cooperation; operate in specialized niche areas related to crime prevention, criminal justice, security governance, counter-terrorism, and the risks and benefits of technological advances.
