History
Established on the initiative of the Government of Costa Rica, under A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) Resolution 35/55 of the 35th Session of the General Assembly, which called for a treaty organization to "support the central Peace and Security Objectives of the United Nations through a World-Wide Movement of Education of Peace." Proposed by President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Carazo, Sep 1978; resolutions, 19 Dec 1978 and 14 Dec 1979, of UN General Assembly; preliminary work of B-XD1364 - International Association of University Presidents (IAUP). Inaugural meeting of Council: 6 Mar 1982. Headquarters in Costa Rica. Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/19735'.
Aims
Promote among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence; stimulate cooperation among peoples; help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.

Council (governing body) comprises 17 members, 10 of whom are appointed by UN Secretary-General in consultation with the Director-General of UNESCO and 7 ex-officio members as follows: the Chancellor of the University; the Rector; 2 members nominated by the Government of Costa Rica; a representative of the UN Secretary-General; a representative of the Director General of UNESCO; the Rector of the United Nations University.
