History

Founded at 5th International Conference. Previously an International Council functioned from Feb 1919 for 9 years. Constitution first drafted 1928 and adopted 1936.

Aims

Enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world; provide girls and young women with opportunities for self-training in development of character, responsible citizenship and service in their own and world communities; advocate on behalf of girls and young women on issues that affect them.

Structure

World Conference (every 3 years), consisting of 2 delegates (maximum) per Member Organization. World Board, comprising 17 Voting Members, CEO (and Treasurer). World Bureau, situated in London (UK), is the secretariat of the World Association. Committees of the World Board: Chairman's Coordinating Group; Development of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts; Communications and Finance and Business Management. World Centres (4): Pax Lodge (London); Sangam (India); Our Cabaña (Mexico); Our Chalet (Switzerland). United Nations Representatives based in Geneva (Switzerland), Nairobi (Kenya), New York, Paris (France), Rome (Italy) and Vienna (Austria). Regions (5) elect their own Regional Committees: Africa; Arab; Asia Pacific; Europe; Western Hemisphere. World Guide and Scout Consultative Committee is the means of liaising with World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM).
