History
25 Feb 1948, by Resolution 106 (VI) of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC, as a subsidiary organ of ECOSOC, to which it reports periodically, and one of five regional commissions of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN). The scope of the Commission was later broadened to include the countries of the Caribbean and by resolution 1984/67 of 27 July 1984.
Aims
Original mandate: contribute to economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean, coordinate actions directed towards this end and reinforce economic relationships among the countries and with other nations of the world. Mandate later included promotion of the region's social and sustainable development.

Organizations of ECLAC System:
'Biennial Session of the Commission' (in even-numbered years) - reviews the work of the Secretariat and approves its biennial Work Programme. Includes 2 ad hoc committees: Cooperation among Developing Countries and Regions; Population and Development.
'Committee of the Whole' (meeting if necessary in years when there is no Biennial Session, normally in New York NY) was set up in 1952 and meets with member states' permanent representatives at UN to review the work of the Secretariat and approve the biennial Work Programme.
'Secretariat', based in Santiago (Chile) and headed by the Executive Secretary who is assisted by the Deputy Executive Secretary, oversees: Division of Administration; Programme Planning and Operations Division; Office of the Secretary of the Commission; Subregional Headquarters (2); National Offices (5).
Subsidiary bodies:
- K-XE3770 - Committee of High-Level Government Experts (meeting as necessary) was set up in 1971 and coordinates among developing country members of the Commission.
- F-XF2175 - Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean (session every 3 years), was set up in 1977 by the Regional Action Plan for the Integration of Women into Latin American Economic and Social Development, adopted in 1977, Havana (Cuba), and acts as liaison between member governments and ECLAC Secretariat.
- E-XE5998 - Consejo Regional de Planificación (CRP) (meeting every 2 years) was set up in 1974 and is the guiding intergovernmental body of ILPES.
- K-XK2215 - Conferencia Estadistica de las Américas (CEA CEPAL), set up 25 Jul 2000;
- E-XE3278 - Central American Economic Cooperation Committee was set up in 1952 and acts as a consultative and advisory body for the 5 Central American member countries of ECLAC in matters concerning Central American economic integration;
- E-XE8871 - Caribbean Council for Science and Technology (CCST) was set up in 1980 and promotes cooperation in the field of science and technology aimed at furthering the social and economic development of member nations.
