Founded

1947-03-28

History

Established provisionally, by Resolution 37 (IV) of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC. Present name adopted by ECOSOC Resolution 1895 (LVII), to reflect the much broader developmental goals and geographical reach that it had by then acquired. Its mandate was broadened further in 1977 by the General Assembly which recognized ESCAP and other regional commissions as the main general economic and social development centres within the United Nations system for their respective regions and as executing agencies for inter-country development projects in their own right. A regional commission of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN).

Aims

Original mandate: assist in regional reconstruction efforts of countries devastated by war. This mandate was subsequently broadened to encompass development issues in general. Programmes and projects aim to stimulate growth, improve socio-economic conditions and help build the foundations of modern society. Mission Statement: reduce poverty, manage globalization and address emerging social issues.

Structure

Commission meets annually at ministerial level. Advisory Committee of Permanent Representatives and Other Representatives Designated by Members of the Commission (APCR), composed of members and associate members. Thematic Committees (3): Managing Globalization; Poverty Reduction; Emerging Social Issues. Special Bodies (2): Least Developed and Landlocked Developing Countries; Pacific Island Developing Countries. Secretariat, comprising Office of the Executive Secretary, including United Nations Information Services and LDC Coordination Unit, and 10 Divisions/Centres: Trade and Investment Division (TID); Environment and Sustainable Development Division (ESDD); Poverty and Development Division (PDD); Emerging Social Issues Division (ESID); Transport and Tourism Division (TTD); Information, Communication and Space Technology Division (ICSTD); Statistics Division (SD); Programme Management Division (PMD); Administrative Services Division (ASD); K-XK0051 - UNESCAP Pacific Operations Centre (UN/EPOC).
