Founded

1978-10-12

History

Set up under resolution 32/162 of the General Assembly of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), in the framework of F-XF1000 - United Nations System, following recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements - Habitat I - 1976, Vancouver BC (Canada).

At 2nd conference, Habitat II, 1996, Istanbul (Turkey), progress was assessed and new goals set, with "Habitat Agenda" containing over 100 commitments and 600 recommendations, adopted by 171 countries.

Upgraded under current title under resolution 56/206, so as to strengthen the role and status of the Centre and its governing body.

Absorbed the former H-XH0133 - United Nations Centre for Housing, Building and Planning (CHBP).

Aims

Work with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities; promote urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty; promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
