History
Established 1948 by Article VI-1 of the Constitution of B-XB0971 - FAO as a subsidiary body of E-XE6120 - European Forestry Commission (EFC), evolving from Silva Mediterranea, set up 1922, following Mediterranean forestry cooperation since 1911. Became a joint Sub-Commission, by Resolutions of Conference sessions, 1953 and 1961. Acronyms subsequently altered in line with those of the AFWC. Rules of Procedure adopted at 7th session, 1960; amended at 8th session, 1962.
Aims
Allow Mediterranean countries which are members of the the European Forestry Commission, the Near East Forestry Commission and the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission to: meet, share experience and establish cooperative programmes; periodically review trends in use of forest land in the Mediterranean area; assess impact of changes implemented in agricultural, industrial and urban sectors; advise member governments on reorientation or improvements necessary to meet changing situations or newly-emerging needs; examine progress in forestry technology in ecological and regional contexts to assess present forest land utilization methods; identify research priorities; determine research projects and recommend measures necessary for their concerted execution by forestry research institutes; conduct technical studies and surveys to assist in implementation of national policies.
