History

Founded after initiative at International Congress, 1890, Vienna (Austria), and according to the Statutes agreed upon on 18 Sep 1891, Badenweiler (Germany).

Decision to reconstitute the Union adopted 1926, Rome (Italy); reconstitution brought into being and new name adopted at 7th Congress, 1929, Stockholm (Sweden).

New Statutes and Internal Regulations adopted at 13th Congress, 1961, Vienna. Statutes renewed and approved at 15th Congress, 1971, Gainesville FL (USA), 1971; revised at 19th Congress, 1990, Montréal QC (Canada). Current Statutes approved and present name adopted at 21st Congress, 2000, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); revised in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2014 and 2017.

Aims

Advance research excellence and knowledge sharing, and foster development of science-based solutions to forest-related challenges for the benefit of forests and people worldwide.
