History
Established by General Assembly resolution 2997 (XXVII), in response to the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, 5-16 Jun 1972, Stockholm (Sweden).
In operation by Jan 1973, working out of temporary headquarters first in Geneva (Switzerland) and then in Nairobi (Kenya).
Restructured following approval by special session of Governing Council, May 1998.
An organ of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) within the F-XF1000 - United Nations System.
Aims
Provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), meets every 2 years, and reports to UN General Assembly through E-XE3377 - ECOSOC, and comprising all 193 UN Member States. Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR), serves as subsidiary inter-sessional body, consisting of accredited Permanent Representatives. UNEA is led by President and a Bureau.
Executive Office, based at E-XE3872 - United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), set up May 1998, comprising Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director and Chief of Staff. Also reporting to Executive Office: New York Office/Secretariat of the Environment Management Group; Governance Affairs Office/Secretariat of Governing Bodies; Chief Scientist; Evaluation Office; Regional Presence; Divisions (7). Also hosts several convention secretariats.
