History
Established within the framework of B-XB3383 - UNESCO, following approval of the draft programme, 1970, by 16th Session of UNESCO General Conference, and arising from International Biological Programme (IBP), 1964-1974.
Aims
Within the natural and social sciences, develop a basis for sustainable use and conservation of biological diversity and for improvement of the global relationship between people and their environment; encourage interdisciplinary research, demonstration and training in natural resource management; by this means, contribute to a better understanding of the environment, including global change, and to greater involvement science and scientists in policy development concerning wise use of biological diversity; set up an international network of sites (biosphere reserves) for research, monitoring, training and information exchange; associate environmental protection with sustainable land use development.

International Coordinating Council (meets every 2 years) comprising 34 members elected by UNESCO General Conference; meetings attended by observers from non-member states, other UN agencies and nongovernmental organizations. Bureau; International Secretariat provided by UNESCO Division of Ecological Sciences. Regional Coordination Groups and Research Panels. National Committees (145). Advisory Committee on Biosphere Reserves appointed by UNESCO, Oct 1991. F-XF8101 - World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) gathers biosphere networks, as well as 8 Regional Networks and 6 Thematic Networks. Regional Networks (8): African Biosphere Reserves Network (AfriMAB); ArabMAB; East Asian Biosphere Reserves Network (EABRN); Pacific Man and the Biosphere Network (PacMAB); South and Central Asia MAB network (SACAM); Southeast Asian Biosphere Reserves Network (SeaBRnet); EuroMAB; Ibero-American MAB Network (IberoMAB). Thematic networks (6): J-AA5222 - World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves (WNICBR); J-AA5223 - World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves (WNMBR); J-AA5225 - Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves Network (MedMAB); NordMAB; J-AA5226 - CaveMAB Network; J-AA5227 - Rede de Reservas da Biosfera CPLP (CPLP MaB).
