History
Founded during Maritime Conference of the United Nations, on conclusion of a Convention which came into force 17 Mar 1958, after acceptance by 21 states (7 having a minimum tonnage of 1 million gross tons). Current title adopted 22 May 1982, on entry into force of amendments to the Convention passed at Assembly in Nov 1975. On the basis of a relationship agreement concluded on 13 Jan 1959, recognized as the specialized agency of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) in the field of shipping, coming within F-XF1000 - United Nations System and linked to E-XE3377 - ECOSOC.
Aims
Provide machinery for cooperation among governments on technical matters affecting international merchant shipping and, having special responsibility for safety and security of life at sea, ensure achievement of the highest possible standards of safety at sea and of efficient navigation; prevent pollution caused by ships and other craft operating in the marine environment (both sea and atmosphere).

Assembly (every 2 years in regular session). Council of 40 member States serving 2-year terms: 10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services; 10 other States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade; 20 other States with special interests in maritime transport or navigation, and whose election will ensure representation of all major geographic areas worldwide. Committees (5): Maritime Safety (MSC); Marine Environment Protection (MEPC); Legal; Technical Cooperation; Facilitation. Sub-Committees (7). Secretariat, headed by Secretary-General, based in London (UK). Regional coordinators/advisors: Côte d'Ivoire; Ghana; Kenya; Philippines; Trinidad-Tobago. Non-governmental organizations in consultative status and inter-governmental organizations which have signed an agreement of cooperation with IMO may send observers to IMO meetings and conferences.
