History

Established, by decision 1978/10 of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC. Composition, organization and administrative arrangements modified, 6 May 1982, by resolution 1982/33. Current name adopted under ECOSOC resolution 1985/17, 28 May 1985. Comes within the framework of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), functioning under T-XT6618 - International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Based at E-XE3343 - United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). A treaty body of E-XK1312 - Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Aims

Monitor implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; examine individual complaints and conduct enquiries under optional protocol procedures; adopt General Comments (interpretations) on articles of the Covenant.

Committee comprises 18 members serving in their personal capacity, elected by ECOSOC from experts in the field nominated by States Parties to the Covenant, with 15 seats equally distributed among regional groups plus 3 seats in accordance with increases in the number of States Parties to the Covenant per regional group; extraordinary sessions held when workload heavy.
