History
1 Mar 1984, Nairobi (Kenya), by merger of H-XH0150 - African Adult Education Association (AAEA), set up 1964, Dar-es-Salaam, and H-XH4273 - Society for the Promotion of Adult Literacy in Africa (AFROLIT), formed in Jul 1968, Nairobi. Previously referred to in French as Association africaine pour l'alphabétisation et l'éducation des adultes (AAAEA). Replaced by H-XD7996 - Pan African Association for Literacy and Adult Education (PAALAE), set up Apr 2000.
Aims
Promote and encourage literacy and adult education; develop human resources to produce indigenous leadership with broad political understanding and orientation and with technical, professional and administrative capacities; build and strengthen self-reliant, democratic institutions in the field of literacy and adult education; unleash people's creativity and confidence to undertake their own initiatives in enhancing their material, spiritual and cultural wellbeing; promote people-to-people networking and solidarity rooted in shared history and vision; increase awareness and understanding of people and governments of Africa of the relationship between literacy, adult and continuing education and development; support establishment of national associations and other institutional frameworks and strengthen their organizational and managerial capacities; support collection and sharing of information; contribute to development of the African peoples through adult education by enhancing development of greater institutional capacities and organizational effectiveness.
