Founded

1894-06-23 Paris France

History

Founded at Congress for the Revival of the Olympic Games, convened by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Headquarters moved from Paris to Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1915. In 1968, the administration moved to Château de Vidy, offered by Lausanne city authorities. A modern administration centre was built next to the Château in 1986. Recognized by the Swiss Federal Council in 1981.

Aims

Raise awareness of and spread the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect; encourage coordination, organization and development of sport and sports competitions; cooperate with competent public and private organizations and authorities in endeavouring to place sport at the service of humanity; ensure regular celebration of the Olympic Games; combat any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic Movement; support and encourage promotion of sports ethics; ensure that the spirit of fair play prevails in sport and that violence is banned; combat doping in sport; take measures to protect the health of clean athletes; oppose any political or commercial abuse of sport or athletes; encourage development of sport for all as part of the foundation of high-level sport, which in turn contributes to development of sport for all; ensure that Olympic Games are held in conditions demonstrating responsible concern for environmental issues; support the International Olympic Academy (IOA) and other institutions devoted to Olympic education.

Structure

The Session (usually once a year) - supreme IOC body - adopts, modifies and interprets Olympic Charter and elects IOC members on proposal by the Executive Board. IOC is the supreme authority of the F-XF3401 - Olympic Movement, which comprises IOC, International Federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs), national associations, clubs and athletes. IOC chooses and elects its members (at Dec 2022 - 101) from persons it considers qualified, who must be nationals of, and be domiciled or have their main centre of interest in, a country with a recognized NOC. Members are its representatives in their respective countries, not delegates of their country within the IOC. Executive Board; President sets up permanent or ad hoc commissions and working groups. Administration, headed by Director General, includes 14 Directors in charge of key sectors: International Cooperation and Development; Sports; Olympic Games; NOC Relations; Television and Marketing Services; Legal Affairs; Technology; Finance and Administration; Communications; Medical and Scientific; Information Management; Culture and Heritage; Olympic Solidarity; Olympic Broadcast Services (OBS); Olympic Archives Television Bureau (OTAB).
