Established under resolution 64/289 of the General Assembly of the A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) within F-XF1000 - United Nations System, on merger of 'Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW)', U-XE9444 - United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW), 'Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)' and U-XF0308 - United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
Officially launched 24 Feb 2011, New York NY (USA).
Aims
Support Member States to advance gender equality, in line with national priorities and international norms and policies; build effective partnerships with civil society and mobilize support, both political and financial, for the achievement of international goals for women. regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

UN General Assembly, E-XE3377 - ECOSOC and E-XE1129 - United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) constitute multi-tiered intergovernmental governance structure for normative support functions and provide normative policy guidance. UN General Assembly, ECOSOC and UN Women Executive Board constitute multi-tiered intergovernmental governance structure for operational activities and provide operational policy guidance. Executive Board, consisting of representatives of 41 countries worldwide, serving on a rotating basis: 10 from Africa, 10 from Asia, 4 from Eastern Europe, 6 from Latin America and Caribbean, 5 from Western Europe and 6 from contributing countries. Bureau, comprising President and 4 regional Vice-Presidents (Asia; Eastern European; Latin America and Caribbean; Western European and Others). Regional Centres (2): Cairo (Egypt); Panama (Panama). Liaison Offices (4): Brussels (Belgium); Japan; African Union; Madrid (Spain).
