Founded following decision made at the 1st World Mountain Forum in Chambéry (France), Jun 2000.

Aims

Raise awareness among governments and public opinion of global economic, social, environmental and cultural challenges represented by mountain areas; promote equitable and sustainable development of mountain areas; open a new international space of dialogue and cooperation on mountain issues between all the stakeholders.

Structure

General Assembly (every 3 years). Whole Board (meets annually), comprising 30 members and 3 colleges as follows: 50% seats for administrative authorities or local governments and mountain communities; 15% seats for representatives from civil society, NGO and associations working alongside mountain people; 35% seats for individuals, including researchers. Executive Board, consisting of 15 members from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. Presidency, comprising President and Secretary-General.
