Established under General Assembly resolution 1995 (XIX), as a permanent organ of the A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), following 1st Session, 23 Mar-16 Jun 1964; linked to E-XE3377 - ECOSOC within F-XF1000 - United Nations System. Based at E-XE3343 - United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).
Aims
Provide a forum for discussion to consider development strategies and policies in a globalized world economy; give special attention to analysing, exchanging and drawing lessons from successful developmental experience. In analytical and deliberative work, focus on: globalization and development; international trade in goods and services; commodity issues; investment, enterprise development and technology; service infrastructure for development and trade efficiency.

'Conference', the highest policymaking body comprising all member states, meets every 4 years at ministerial level to formulate policy guidelines and set work priorities. 'Trade and Development Board', the governing (executive) body, meeting annually in regular session and up to 3 times a year in 1-day executive sessions. Divisions (5): Africa, least developed countries and special programmes; Globalization and development strategies; Investment and enterprise; International trade and commodities; Technology and logistics. Since Jul 1993, UNCTAD Secretariat has been servicing E-XE3120 - United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD). Also provides secretariat for: E-XE0197 - Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting (ISAR).
