History

28 Apr 1957, Aix-les-Bains (France), under the auspices of F-XF2479 - Bilingual World, set up 1951, Paris (France), grouping former members of the French Resistance and organizing 'twinnings' between French and English-speaking towns. Original title: United Towns Organization. Also referred to as World Federation of United and Twinned Towns -- Fédération mondiale des cités unies et villes jumelées (FMVJ). Current name in English adopted at World Congress, 1998. Merged with H-XB2736 - International Union of Local Authorities (IULA) to form B-XF6714 - World Organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), May 2004.

Aims

Develop cultural, social, economic and technical exchanges between local and regional authorities, through town-twinning and other forms of international cooperation, international working parties on themes of common interest and regular conferences. Concerns include: North-North, North-South and East-West cooperation; social problems, including immigrant populations and the disabled; access of women to public office; peace; youth; environment; water; sanitation; transport.
