History
Founded on signature of a Treaty by representatives of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, member countries of the F-XD0055 - Andean Community, as a principal organ of T-XT6969 - Andean Subregional Integration Agreement (Cartagena Agreement) (Article 6 of the Treaty), by 'Tratado de Creación del Tribunal de Justicia de la Comunidad Andina'. The Court is currently the judicial organ of F-XF4919 - Sistema Andino de Integración (SAI). Under 'Protocol Modifying the Charter the Court of Justice of the Andean Community', approved 28 May 1996, Trujillo (Peru), entered into force 25 Aug 1999, it took on new functions, including: hearing of actions with regard to an omission or failure to act; acting as arbitrator; jurisdiction in labour actions.
Aims
Interpret Andean Community law to ensure that it is applied uniformly in the territories of member countries; settle disputes arising from implementation of the rules which form the legal system of the Cartagena Agreement.

Tribunal comprises 4 judges, one of each country, but representing the Community as a whole and not their countries of origin, and each assuming the Presidency in rotation. Permanent headquarters in Quito (Ecuador).
