History

Founded 1979, combining 'Opportunity Program', set up 1971, by Alfred Whittaker, with 'Maranatha Trust', set up 1976, by David Bussau. Original title: Institute for International Development.

Aims

As an international Christian development agency, provide opportunities for people in chronic poverty to transform their lives by creating jobs, stimulating small business and strengthening communities among the poor; enable grassroots capitalism so that individuals, regardless of their economic status, can improve their income through hard work and free enterprise; stimulate individual creativity and personal responsibility by allowing each individual to choose appropriate income-generating activity. In particular, support independent, micro-business lending institutions that assist very poor people in starting and expanding small businesses.
