History
Aug 1957, Santiago (Chile), following technical assistance agreement between A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) and the Government of Chile. From 1966 to 1974, functioned as a regional project financed by E-XE3382 - UNDP and by governments which signed the corresponding Plan of Operations (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Venezuela). In May 1971, recognized as an autonomous organ under the aegis of the then Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA), currently E-XE4175 - United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Under ECLAC resolution 569 (XXVII), became the Population Division of ECLAC, whilst maintaining its original title. Previously also referred to as Latin American Demographic Centre -- Centro Latinoamericano de Demografia.
Aims
Contribute to the socio-economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean in the field of population by assisting countries to increase their self-reliance and promote horizontal cooperation while providing services that can be furnished more effectively at the regional level; provide teaching, research, technical assistance and technical information services; analyse population growth and its interrelations with economic, social, environmental and political aspects of development; provide national institutions with the technical cooperation, training, services and technology required to utilize population information.
