History
29 May 1959, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), comprising Dahomey (currently Benin), Côte d'Ivoire, Niger and Upper Volta (currently Burkina Faso), superseding Union Sahel-Benin, which had been created some months earlier. Togo joined the institution in 1966. The aim of the Entente Council was initially political, but at present it is strictly economic. Also referred to in English as Council of the Entente and as Council of the Entente States. Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/18820'.
Aims
Promote economic development of the region; harmonize and strengthen policies and economies of member states on the basis of friendship, brotherhood and solidarity.
Activities

Conference of Heads of State and Government (twice a year); Council of Foreign Ministers (meeting prior to Conference of Heads of State); Secretariat General. Specialized institutions: U-XF2427 - Centre régional de formation pour entretien routier (CERFER); U-XF4252 - Mutual Aid and Loan Guaranty Fund of the Entente Council (EC-Fund). Other training centres include: U-XG0773 - Centre des formation technique de transporteurs routiers (CFTTR), Niamey (Niger), currently the responsibility of the government of Niger; U-XK0380 - Centre de formation dans les transports routiers et les activités auxiliaires (CFTRA), Ouagadougou. Conference of Heads of State constitutes the Board of Directors of FEGECE, which was created Jun 1966, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), to deal with the issuing of guarantees for loans contracted by member states, replacing 'Solidarity Fund -- Fonds de solidarité', created by same agreement as the Council itself. The Fund carries out all economic activities of the Council, working through a Management Committee and Administrative Secretariat. Chairmanship rotates among Heads of State.
