History

Established by resolution 1244 (1999) of E-XE3376 - United Nations Security Council (UNSC), within F-XF1000 - United Nations System, in the framework of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN).

Aims

Implement a recovery plan to assist the process of building peace, democracy, stability and self-government in Kosovo; perform basic civilian administration functions; promote establishment of substantial autonomy and self-government; facilitate a political process to determine future status; coordinate humanitarian and disaster relief activities of all international agencies; support reconstruction of key infrastructure; promote human rights; ensure safe and unimpeded return of all refugees and displaced persons; maintain law and order in conjunction with the Kosovo Police Force.

Structure

Comprises political, humanitarian, civil affairs, legal, police, military, public information, administrative and logistic personnel and consultants, headed by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Kosovo (SRSG). Regional Administrators (5); Municipal Administrators (30). Municipal Boards, headed by Chief Executive Officers, act as executive bodies at local level and are responsible for day-to-day running of services.
