History

Jun 1951, Naples (Italy), as Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH) within the framework of E-XE2231 - Allied Command Operations (ACO) of C-XC3005 - NATO. Name changed to Joint Force Command South following ongoing NATO Headquarters restructuring, 2004.

Aims

Prepare for, plan and conduct military operations in order to preserve the peace, security and territorial integrity of Alliance member states and freedom of the seas and economic lifelines throughout SACEUR's Area of Responsibility (AOR) and beyond; contribute to crisis management and deterrence by ensuring that assigned headquarters and forces are at the designated state of readiness for the conduct and support of operations, and conduct prudent operational level military analysis and planning that includes the identification of required forces.

Structure

Headed by Commander Joint Force. Responsible to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Comprises: Component Command Air South based at Headquarters Air South, Izmir (Turkey); Component Command Land South based at Headquarters Land South, Madrid (Spain); Component Command Navy South based at Headquarters Nav South, Naples (Italy).
