History
5 Jun 1970, Folkestone (UK), by merger of: H-XH7113 - International Garment Workers Federation, set up in 1893; H-XH0269 - International Federation of Textile Workers' Associations, created in 1894, Manchester (UK); H-XH2458 - International Shoe and Leather Workers' Federation (ISLWF), set up in 1907. The first two federations had merged, 17 Jun 1960, Copenhagen (Denmark), to become International Textile and Garment Workers' Federation (ITGWF) -- Fédération internationale des travailleurs des industries du textile et de l'habillement -- Internationale Textil- und Bekleidungsarbeiter-Vereinigung -- Internationella Textil- och Becklädnadsarbetarefederationen, the name under which the present Federation was also first known. Statutes of ITGLWF adopted at Special Congress, 5 Jun 1970, Folkestone (UK), and amended: 1972, Amsterdam (Netherlands); 1976, Dublin (Ireland); 1980, Vienna (Austria); 1984, Tel Aviv (Israel); 1988, Tokyo (Japan); 1992, Espinho (Portugal); 1996, Melbourne (Australia); 2000, Norrköping (Sweden); 2004, Istanbul (Turkey); 2009, Frankfurt (Germany). Nov 2007, integrated H-XC1888 - International Federation Textile and Clothing (IFTC-WCL). Dissolution process started, Jun 2012, on merger with H-XB2257 - International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) and H-XB0003 - International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM), to become B-XJ6079 - IndustriALL Global Union (IndustriALL), and terminated end 2013.
Aims
Promote fraternal cooperation among textile, garment, shoe and leather workers of all countries and protect and improve their economic, social and cultural interests; foster awareness of fellowship among all workers of these trades, without distinction of nationality, colour, race or religious denomination; establish, promote and maintain free democratic trade unions of textile, garment, shoe and leather workers in all countries, and unite these in a strong international organization; ensure protection of workers against all dangers arising from their employment in these industries; support national and international action arising in the struggle against economic exploitation and political oppression of workers, with a view to raising their status and improving their well-being; secure genuine equality for women employed in the sector to ensure their integration into trade union organizations and promote their participation in activities and decision-making at all levels; cooperate in the establishment of a world order based on association of all peoples in freedom and equality for the protection of their common welfare by joint use of the earth's resources.

Congress (every 5 years). Executive Committee (meets annually) of up to 60 members. Praesidium (meets twice a year) comprises President, 15 Vice-Presidents and General Secretary. Trade Section Committees may be appointed. International Secretariat, headed by General Secretary. Regional Organizations: U-XE3314 - Textile Workers' Asian Regional Organization (TWARO), set up 30 Nov 1960, Manila (Philippines), groups 29 affiliates in 22 countries with over 2.3 million members; U-XD1104 - International Textile, Garment, Leather and Shoe Workers' Federation - Regional Inter-American Organization, formed 21 Oct 1966, Cuernavaca (Mexico), groups over a million members in 17 countries; H-XD0654 - European Trade Union Federation for Textiles, Clothing and Leather (ETUF-TCL), based in Brussels (Belgium), has its own Secretariat and organizational structure; 'ITGLWF African Regional Organization', set up in Aug 2005, Johannesburg (South Africa), groups 59 affiliates in 34 countries with 369,561 members.
