Founded as a constituent association of A-XA2722 - International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Statutes and By-Laws adopted 1960, Helsinki (Finland); revised: 1967, Zurich (Switzerland); 1979, Canberra (Australia). Constituent association of IUGG, which is one of the 20 Scientific Unions grouped within: H-XA1752 - International Council for Science (ICSU).
Aims
Study scientific problems related to volcanoes and volcanic processes, past and present, and to the chemistry of the Earth's interior; encourage, initiate and coordinate research and promote international cooperation in these studies; arrange for the discussion and publication of results of scientific research on volcanology and on the chemistry of the Earth's interior; encourage volcanologists to alert appropriate authorities to the importance of adequate surveillance of active and potentially active volcanoes and of volcanic risk assessment.
