Founded

1920

History

Founded as an outgrowth of B-XB3584 - World Student Christian Federation (WSCF), in order to publicize and relieve the needs of students and academics suffering from the effects of World War I. Programmes and self-help projects for university people extended during the 1930's into the fields of student health, cooperative work and research into the problems of higher education. Took over assets of U-XJ7351 - World Student Relief (WRS), 30 Sep 1950. Present name adopted on expansion into Asia and Africa; subsequently activities also expanded into Latin America. In 1954 absorbed H-XH2429 - International Scholarship Fund Committee (ISFC), which had been set up Nov 1950, Paris (France). Following a decision of General Assembly in 1970, moved from its university welfare role into that of promoting social action by the university community. Statutes amended: 1926; 1950; 1970; 1972, 1988, 1991.
