History
1972, Manila (Philippines), as Committee for Co-ordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in the South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC) -- Comité de coordination des recherches en commun de ressources minérales au large des côtes du Pacifique du Sud, as a special regional body under the aegis of the then United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), currently E-XE4177 - United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). In late 1974, a UNDP Marine Geologist was appointed and a Technical Secretariat set up in Suva (Fiji). In 1984, became an independent, regional inter-governmental body through signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by member countries, which was replaced by a new constitution known as the Tarawa Agreement, adopted Oct 1990, coming into force 18 Nov 1990. Subsequently changed title to South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission, 1989. Current name adopted, 2006. As of 1 Jan 2011, transformed into a Division within D-XD3260 - Pacific Community (SPC).
Aims
Contribute to sustainable development, reduced poverty and enhanced resilience for the people of the Pacific by supporting development of natural resources, particularly non-living resources, investigating natural systems and the management of vulnerability through applied environmental geosciences, appropriate technologies, knowledge management, technical and policy advice, human resource development and advocacy of Pacific issues.
