History

3 Dec 1960, Ibadan (Nigeria), as Association of Surgeons of West Africa -- Association des chirurgiens d'Afrique occidentale. Present name adopted Jan 1973. Constitution revised 29 Jan 1975 when it became a Constituent College, together with D-XD5992 - West African College of Physicians (WACP) of U-XF6089 - West African Postgraduate Medical College (WAPMC), under the auspices of H-XD4575 - West African Health Community (WAHC). Constitution again revised 25 Jan 1984, Freetown (Sierra Leone). Also referred to in French as Collège des chirurgiens de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. On coming into force of a treaty, signed 7-9 Jul 1987, Abuja (Nigeria), WAHC will be replaced by E-XE5978 - West African Health Organization (WAHO), covering both English and French-speaking West Africa.

Aims

Promote and organize postgraduate education and training in surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthesia, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology and dental surgery in West Africa; foster and coordinate education, study and research in surgery and allied disciplines and encourage friendship and free exchange of ideas among surgeons working in the region.
