History
Established 8 Aug 1959, Santiago (Chile), at 5th Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, to carry out provisions of the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man, signed 1948, Bogota. Statute approved 25 May 1960, by D-XD3030 - OAS; amended 1965, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). New Statute approved by OAS General Assembly, Oct 1979, following coming into effect of T-XT6916 - Inter-American Convention on Human Rights (Pact of San José de Costa Rica), 18 Jul 1978. New regulations: adopted Apr 1980; modified 29 Jun 1987. Inter-American Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression approved at 108th regular session, Oct 2000.
Aims
Promote observance and protection of human rights in the Americas; serve as a consultative body to the OAS in these matters.
