History

Derives from S-XS9962 - International Geological Congress (IGC), set up in 1875, Buffalo NY (USA).

Original statutes accepted by Constitutive Assembly, 9 Mar 1961; ratified 28 Sep 1961, when became a member of H-XA1752 - International Council for Science (ICSU); amended by Council at subsequent International Geological Congresses in 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976. Current Bye-Laws adopted by Council at 34th Congress, 9 Aug 2012, Brisbane (Australia).

Aims

Promote development of earth sciences through support of broad-based scientific studies relevant to the entire earth-system; apply results of these and other studies to preserving Earth's natural environment, using all natural resources wisely and improving the prosperity of nations and the quality of human life; strengthen public awareness of geology and advance geological education in the widest sense; foster dialogue and communication among the various specialists in earth sciences around the world.
