2001-07-08 Lusaka Zambia

History

Established on signature by African Heads of State of a treaty dissolving H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU) and setting up the new organization over a one-year transition period. Constitutive Act signed 11 Jul 2001, Lusaka, came into force 28 Jun 2002. Heads of State and Government meeting/inaugural session of the Assembly, 10 Jul 2002, Durban (South Africa), adopted African Union Durban Declaration. Establishment is based on a suggestion in 1999, Sirte (Libyan AJ), by General Moammar Gaddafi, head of Libyan AJ.

Aims

Achieve greater unity and solidarity among African countries and the peoples of Africa; defend the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of member states; accelerate political and socio-economic integration of the continent; promote and defend African common positions on issues of interest to the continent and its peoples; encourage international cooperation, taking account of the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; promote peace, security and stability on the continent; promote democratic principles and institutions, popular participation, the rule of law and and good governance; promote and protect human and peoples' rights in accordance with the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and other relevant instruments; establish the conditions necessary for the continent to play its rightful role in the global economy and in international negotiations; promote sustainable development on economic, social and cultural levels and the integration of African economies; promote cooperation in all fields of human activity so as to raise living standards of African peoples; coordinate and harmonize policies among existing and future regional economic communities leading to gradual attainment of the Union's objectives; advance the development of the continent by promoting research in all fields, in particular in science and technology; work with relevant international partners in the eradication of preventable diseases and the promotion of good health on the continent.
