Founded as a result of a resolution passed at the International Electrical Congress, Sep 1904, St Louis MO (USA).
First Statutes drawn up at Preliminary Meeting, 1906, London, adopted in 1908.
Revised Statutes adopted: 1949, Stresa (Italy); 1963, Venice (Italy); 1976, Nice (France); 1991, Madrid (Spain); 1992, Rotterdam (Netherlands); 1997; 2000; 2001 (amended in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009).
Aims
Prepare and publish International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies; administer Conformity Assessment Systems covering equipment, services and personnel.

Administers the following Conformity Assessment Systems: F-XF3867 - IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components (IECQ); F-XD1569 - IEC System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE); F-XJ4453 - International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for use in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx System), IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications (IECRE System).
