1975-05-28 Lagos Nigeria
History
Established 28 May 1975, Lagos (Nigeria), on signature of Treaty of Lagos by Heads of State of 15 West African countries; outstanding technical protocols signed Nov 1976. Cape Verde joined in 1977. Mauritania withdrew membership, 1 jan 2001. Protocol on Mutual Assistance in Defence Matters adopted 1981. May 1990, Banjul (Gambia), agreed to rationalize subregional institutions in West Africa within the framework of ECOWAS so that ECOWAS would eventually become the sole economic community of the West African region. Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/14843'.
Aims
Promote cooperation and integration among member States leading to the establishment of an economic union in West Africa in order to to raise the living standard of its peoples and maintain and enhance the economic stability, foster relations among member States and contribute to the progress and development of the African continent.

A second monetary zone, the
F-XF6262 - West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) for the non-UEMOA Member States was initiated in 2000 to accelerate and complement ECOWAS efforts in creating a single West Africa-wide currency.
