History

Founded following first initiatives taken in 1954 by Norwegian and Canadian parliamentarians. In 1968, headquarters were transferred from Paris to Brussels (Belgium) and the Secretariat was reorganized. Support pledged by Heads of NATO Governments: in 'Declaration on Atlantic Relations', Jun 1974, Brussels; Jun 1987, in the Reykjavik (Iceland) Ministerial Statement; in 'An Alliance in the 21st Century', Apr 1999, in the Washington Summit Communiqué; in Jun 2004, in the Istanbul (Turkey) Summit Communiqué; Jul 2016, in the Warsaw (Poland) Summit Communiqué.

Aims

Foster dialogue among parliamentarians on major security issues; facilitate parliamentary awareness and understanding of Alliance policies; strengthen the transatlantic relationship; assist in development of parliamentary democracy throughout the Euro-Atlantic area; assist in development of parliamentary mechanisms, practices and 'know-how' related to democratic control of armed forces; contribute to making the policies of the Alliance more transparent and comprehensible to parliaments and their public.
