History
Established as a mandated initiative of D-XD8572 - African Union (AU), on finalizing policy framework of H-XF6225 - New Africa Initiative (NAI), at a meeting of African leaders to promote trade and sound economic management. Derives from merger, finalized 3 Jul 2001, of: Millennium Partnership for the African Recovery Programme (MAP), set up following decisions of Extraordinary Summit of H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU), Sep 1999, Sirte (Libyan AJ); Omega Plan for Africa of President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal, OAU Summit, Jul 2000, Togo. NEPAD is sometimes referred to as New Partnership for African Development. NEPAD Declaration of Good Governance and NEPAD Plan of Action approved, 10 Jul 2002, Durban, at launch of the African Union. At 31st Ordinary Session of Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government, July 2018, NEPAD Agency transformed into the first development agency of African Union.
Aims
Reverse Africa's economic decline and create stability and growth, with the target of more than doubling African economic output and sustaining those increased levels for the next 15 years; encourage funding to encourage trade within Africa and promote sound economic management; strengthen inter-African cooperation and integration; work to overcome poverty and achieve better living standards for all the peoples of Africa. Encourage African leaders to take joint responsibility for: strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention, management and resolution at sub-regional and continental levels; promoting and protecting democracy and human rights; developing clear standards of accountability, transparency and participatory governance at national and subnational levels; building capacity of African states to set and enforce the legal framework and to maintain law and order.
