History

Mar 1984, Conakry (Guinea). Statutes adopted 9 Jul 1987, Abuja (Nigeria), at 10th meeting of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of F-XD3462 - Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as part of ECOWAS Social Programme to mobilize all sections of the West African population for the socio-economic integration of the sub-region.

Aims

Mobilize and involve women of the sub-region in the Community-building process; initiate Community (ECOWAS) projects in priority sectors, inter alia agricultural development, trade, water supply schemes, desertification control and education; urge and encourage by all possible means private initiative on the part of women, through, among other things, access to credit for women and the improvement of distribution channels; initiate and develop research programmes on living conditions and working conditions of women and urge Member States of ECOWAS to accord greater attention and a more effective support to the implementation of such programmes; promote peace, gender equality and sustainable development of women and children.
