Ensure optimal health for peoples of the Americas; contribute to the wellbeing of their families and communities; lead strategic collaborative efforts among member countries and other partners to promote equity in health, combat disease and improve quality and length of life; encourage cooperation among the people of the Americas in charting a course to sustainable human development, leading to health for all and by all; work with the community to promote and protect health; collaborate with the international community, ministries of health, social security agencies and other government institutions, NGOs, universities, community groups and others to strengthen national and local health systems and improve health and wellbeing; defend the Americas against emerging or re-emerging dangerous infectious diseases; promote efforts leading to healthy public policies, healthy communities and health promotion, including measures to protect such high-risk groups as children, mothers, workers, indigenous peoples, the poor and the elderly.
