Founded

1984

History

Founded on recommendations of an international group of 30 experts in nutrition convened in Bellagio (Italy) in 1983, under the auspices of F-XF2488 - United Nations University (UNU), with active engagement of U-XG6778 - Nevin Scrimshaw International Nutrition Foundation (INF). B-XB0971 - FAO has taken an active role in the Network since 1990; since 1999 serves as the global coordinator. A Task Force of B-XB2743 - International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS).

Aims

Promote international participation and cooperation in the acquisition and dissemination of complete and accurate data on the composition of foods, beverages and their ingredients, in forms appropriate to meet the needs of various users, government agencies, nutrition scientists and educators, health and agriculture professionals, policy makers and planners, food producers/processors/retailers and consumers; develop international criteria for judging the quality of data on food composition; identify existing sources of useful data on food composition; promote generation, acquisition and dissemination of new data on the composition of foods, beverages and their ingredients that meet the criteria developed; facilitate, on a world-wide basis, access, retrieval, interchange and general harmonization of food composition data.
