History

Established following discussions in 1948 between the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, the University of London School Examinations Matriculation Council, and the West African Departments of Education over the future policy of school examinations as would be best suited to the needs of West Africa. March 1950, publication of a report supporting the proposal for a West African Examinations Council. The report was adopted without reservation by the four West African Governments and an ordinance establishing The West African Examinations Council as a corporate body was drafted by the West African Inter-Territorial Secretariat in consultation with the Governments.

Aims

Determine the examinations required in the public interest in English-speaking West African countries; conduct prescribed examinations in member countries and issue certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally; harmonize examination procedures and standards.
