History
8 Jan 1966, following adoption of a resolution at 1st Arab Conference on Literacy, 1964, Alexandria (Egypt). Original English title: Arab Literacy and Adult Education Organization. Also referred to in French as Organisme arabe de lutte contre l'analphabétisme et d'enseignement aux adultes. Originally in Baghdad (Iraq), transferred to Tunis (Tunisia), Nov 1989, when incorporated in the main body of D-XD4163 - Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO); ceased activities.
Aims
Help Arab States in building up departments responsible for literacy and adult education; assist in setting their literacy and adult education plans within the framework of their comprehensive plans for social and economic development; carry out research, studies, statistical work and pilot projects in the field; facilitate exchange of experience on research and literacy activities among Arab States and between the Arab region and other relevant regional and international bodies; issue specialized publications and prepare prototype educational materials; provide member States with technical aid and fellowships.
