History
Established on entry into force of a treaty signed 31 Mar 1965. Commenced operations 11 May 1974, Brussels (Belgium). Closely related to D-XD0190 - Benelux Union. Treaty modified by the Protocols of 10 Jun 1981, 23 Nov 1984, and 15 Oct 2016. Statutes registered in 'UNTS/1 13176'.
Aims
Ensure uniformity in applying and interpreting specifically designed juridical rules common to countries of the Benelux Economic Union; settle disputes in administration of Benelux affairs.

Three Chambers: (i) First Chamber deals with preliminary questions and is the cassation instance against decisions of the Second Chamber. Composed of 9 judges and 9 substitute judges from the cassation courts of the Benelux countries; (ii) Second Chamber for appeals against final decisions on trademarks of the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property. Composed of 3 judges and 3 substitute judges from the appeal courts of the Benelux countries; (iii) Third Chamber deals with appeals from officials of the Benelux Economic Union and the Benelux Organization for Intellectual Property. Composed of Members of the First and Second Chambers. Prosecutors Office of the Court, composed of 3 Solicitors General, one from each country of the Benelux, of whom one is the Chief Prosecutor and each of whom may have a substitute.
