History
26 May 1983, by MINCONMAR, currently F-XF1523 - Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA), on completion of transformation from the (national) Ghana Nautical College, set up 1957. Original title: /The/ Regional Maritime Academy, Accra (RMA) -- Académie maritime régionale d'Accra. Founding members: Cameroon; Gambia; Ghana; Liberia; Sierra Leone. Set up with the assistance of E-XE3382 - UNDP, B-XB1117 - International Maritime Organization (IMO) and governments of Norway and Egypt. Upgraded into a university, Oct 2007.
Aims
Develop maritime industry in the sub-region and beyond, through capacity building of the highest international standard; offer educational programmes relevant to modern trends and challenges of the industry and related fields; ensure availability of all IMO 'Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95)' mandatory training programmes.

University in Ghana serves anglophone countries while sister academy, F-XF1845 - Regional Academy of Maritime Science and Technology, Côte d'Ivoire, serves francophone countries. Board of Governors comprises: ministers of maritime affairs of founding member countries; Secretary General of MOWCA; University Rector; Students' Representative. Rector serves as Chief Executive and is responsible for day-to-day management. Educational departments (6): Nautical Studies; Marine Engineering; Marine Electricals and Electronics; Maritime Studies; Maritime Safety; Information Communication and Technology.
