History
Established on signature by Canada, Japan, Russia and USA of T-XT9222 - Convention for the Conservation of Anadromous Stocks in the North Pacific Ocean which, upon exchange of ratifications, entered into force 16 Feb 1993. Korea Rep acceded to the Convention, 27 May 2003. Inaugural meeting, Feb 1993, Ottawa ON (Canada). Replaces H-XD2284 - International North Pacific Fisheries Commission (INPFC).
Aims
Promote conservation of anadromous stocks in the North Pacific Ocean and its adjacent seas by prohibiting direct salmon fisheries on the high seas of the North Pacific, minimizing incidental salmon catch by other fisheries in the area and prohibiting retention onboard vessels of salmon taken as an incidental catch.

Committees (3): Scientific Research and Statistics (CSRS); Enforcement (ENFO), Finance and Administration (F and A). CSRS Science Sub-Committee. Working Groups (4): International Year of the Salmon; Salmon Marking; Stock Assessment; Stock Identification. Plenary sessions of annual meeting open to the public; all non-public meetings closed but observers and guests may be invited.
