History
Established by decision of General Assembly of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), based on the experience of U-XK0046 - International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR), the 1994 Yokohama Strategy and the 1999 strategy 'A Safer World in the 21st Century: Disaster and Risk Reduction', and the 'Geneva Mandate on Disaster Reduction' adopted Jul 1999 at IDNDR Programme Forum. Mandate extended 2001 (GA Res 56/195). 'Hyogo Declaration' and 'Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015' endorsed, 2005. Succeeded by 'Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030', adopted 18 Mar 2015.
Aims
Serve as the focal point in the UN system for the coordination of disaster reduction; ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the UN system and regional organizations and activities in socio-economic and humanitarian fields.
