History
24 Oct 1980, Accra (Ghana), on signature of constitution following decision, 24 Oct 1978, Lagos (Nigeria), at 9th Session of the Assembly of West African Health Ministers, within the framework of H-XD4575 - West African Health Community (WAHC) and recommendations, 1977, Benin City (Nigeria), of 'Special Committee on Nursing Education in West Africa'. Provisional Council (3 committees) carried out preparatory work 1978-1980. Officially inaugurated, 1981, Banjul (Gambia).
Aims
Promote excellence in nursing education, at both basic and post-basic levels; maintain standards of nursing within the West African Health Community; accredit institutions for programmes of the college; design and provide facilities for educational and training programmes; establish Code of Ethics; influence government policy decisions.
